This Is A Whale: From Dundee’s Whales to Whales in Space

Once upon a time, Dundee was the heart of the Jute, Jam and Journalism industries… and also whaling. Yep, our wee city sent ships to the Arctic to hunt whales, and for a while it was one of the biggest industries here.

But let’s be real: whaling isn’t exactly something to romanticise. It was dangerous, brutal work that harmed incredible creatures we now know deserve protection, not persecution. While it shaped the city’s history, today Dundee has moved forward — and so have we. At Wilde Mode, we’re all about eco-conscious, cruelty-free fashion. We love whales, but in our world, they’re cosmic, not caught.

That’s why our brand new This Is A Whale Collection takes inspiration not from the harpoons of Dundee’s past, but from the absurd, brilliant imagination of Douglas Adams. In The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a sperm whale suddenly comes into existence above a strange planet, pondering life as it plummets through space. It’s surreal, it’s witty, and it’s oddly profound — very Wilde Mode, if you ask us.

So instead of whales in nets, think whales in galaxies. Instead of history’s mistakes, think of better futures. Our This Is A Whale print is all about cosmic playfulness, literary love, and underwear that makes you feel like you could float among the stars (without worrying about itchy seams or dodgy fastenings).

Why whales in space?

Because they’re ridiculous. Because they make us laugh. Because they remind us not to take life too seriously. And because in true Wilde Mode fashion, we’d rather take the unexpected route — weaving together Dundee heritage, nerdy literature, and eco-friendly underwear into something new, positive, and joyful.

So don’t panic. Grab your towel, slip into your whale-print undies, and join us in celebrating a future where whales drift freely in the stars — and your underwear feels as limitless as the universe.
